Plant Care Guidelines

Adaptation and Pollination:
See the variety chart in
Sweet Cherries.

Soil:
Any good, deep, well-drained garden soil. pH 5.5 to 8.0.

Fertilizer:
Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer according to label directions.

Water:
How much: Apply enough water to wet the soil 3 to 4 feet deep. To determine the proper amount of water for your soil type, see How Much Water to Apply.

How often: Water when the soil 6 inches below the surface is just barely moist.

Pruning:
Cherries are borne on short fruiting branches (spurs) that grow on 2-year-old wood. The spurs are very long-lived and often continue to bear for 10 years or more. Prune lightly, thinning out weak, crossing, or dead twigs and branches.

Harvest:
Harvest when the cherries are fully colored. With ripe cherries, the stem will easily separate from the spur when the fruit is gently lifted or pulled. When picking cherries, avoid damaging the spurs.
